Dan Marino to buy Auberge condo on Fort Lauderdale beach

Former Miami Dolphins great Dan Marino will buy a condo at Auberge Beach Residences & Spa

Dan Marino, Hall of Fame quarterback and empty nester to be, is buying a place on Fort Lauderdale beach.

Marino and wife Claire are taking a unit at Auberge Beach Residences & Spa, according to the developers. The Related Group of Miami is building the 171-unit condo at 2200 N. Ocean Blvd. in partnership with Fortune International Group and the Ireland and Mitchell families.

The units, which start at $1.8 million, are planned for the site of the former Ireland's Inn.

The Marinos will watch the last of their six children head to college this fall. Marino knows Related's chairman, Jorge Perez, whose pal, Steve Ross, owns the Miami Dolphins. Ross hired Marino last year as a special adviser.

Sales at Auberge have started, but the development isn't expected to open before 2017 or 2018.

Although South Florida home values have improved dramatically in the past three years, not even Marino, 53, could escape the rush of the market's collapse.

In 2011, the Marinos sold a nearly 20,000-square-foot Weston palace for $7.2 million, or less than half of the asking price. They bought it for $2.15 million in 1995, though they spent plenty more to renovate it.

In 2008, the couple took a $600,000 loss on a 9,250-square-foot home in Parkland. They bought it for $2.95 million in 2005.

The Marinos still own a condo in Weston, property records show.
